Essential Oils for Gardening: Pest Control

Confession Time: I had neglected my garden for a week, y’all. I didn’t water it, didn’t go out and give it any love for a week. When I came back to check on the progress, I found a few disappointing (but inevitable) issues. My cucumbers were not doing well. It looked totally dead, and it was covered in ants. My zucchinis were turning yellow and there were a LOT of squash bugs covering the plants. Surprisingly my tomatoes and bell peppers still looked vibrant. So, if you want to plant something hardy that doesn’t need a lot of attention, plant tomatoes and bell peppers. I knew I had to do something to address all these problems. The first thing I did was water the garden to bring some life back to it. Then I started doing some research on a natural alternative to pest control.

So, I did a quick Google search. “Essential oils for gardening pests.” Lots of results popped up. I scanned different searches and came up with a concoction based on what I had in my case. I grabbed an empty 8 ounce spray bottle and started filling it up with various doTERRA essential oils.

I went out and sprayed my garden, I used the whole bottle on my entire garden. I came back the next day pleasantly surprised. The squash bugs were completely gone and the ants in my cucumber bed had decreased. Ants are a pretty constant problem here in South Texas, so this wasn’t too surprising that they weren’t totally gone.

I’ve gone out this week and continued to lightly spray our plants every few days, and I am so pleased to have found a natural solution to my garden pest problem. Bonus: I’ve still seen ladybugs and bees happily flying about, so it still allows for the good bugs in your garden to do their thing. Are you ready for my recipe?

doTERRA Gardening Pest Control Spray

7 drops doTERRA Basil

7 drops doTERRA Eucalyptus

7 drops doTERRA Peppermint

Fill the remainder of your bottle with water.

Feel free to adjust this recipe based on your needs. If you’re seeing a lot of pests, you may want to add a few more drops of essential oil, or spray more often. You can also take additional measures of pest control, like planting marigolds or various herbs around your garden to deter pests.

After Sun Spray with doTERRA Essential Oils

I hope everyone had a Happy Easter! He is risen! We had a blast at our house, and our weekend was filled with Easter festivities. It was also filled with sunshine. We went to an outdoor Easter egg hunt with lots of fun things for the kids to do like a petting zoo, train ride, and bounce house. My boys wanted to make sure they participated in every single activity there was, and by the end of the day I ended up looking like a lobster.

With summer months approaching, I wanted to make sure I made an “After Sun Spray” and kept it handy for times like this. This spray will help to soothe and cool your skin that was exposed too long to the sun. It uses oils like Lavender, Melaleuca (tea tree), and Frankincense which are wonderful at soothing skin irritations, and help to purify the skin. I’ve also added Peppermint essential oil to the mix because it really works to cool your skin.

I’ve mentioned this before, but I use doTERRA essential oils. It’s a brand I love and trust enough to use on my entire family. I highly encourage everyone to do their research and choose a brand with high standards and purity you can feel confident using on your family.

This spray can be used for all sorts of skin irritations; like overexposure to the sun, bug bites, minor burns and scrapes, and rashes. We use some version of this spray almost daily in my home. It’s so simple to make, and easy to use!

After Sun Spray with doTERRA Essential Oils

Ingredients:

2 oz spray bottle

10 drops Lavender essential oil

10 drops Melaleuca essential oil

10 drops Frankincense essential oil

10 drops Peppermint essential oil

Water

Aloe vera juice (optional)

Directions:

  1. Fill up spray bottle about 3/4 of the way with purified water.
  2. Add essential oils. (And Aloe vera juice to top off the bottle, if desired).
  3. Twist the top on the spray bottle and shake all ingredients together.
  4. Spray over irritated skin and enjoy the soothing effect of the After Sun Spray.

Stop Waiting. Start Doing: Overcoming Fear by Taking Action

Starting something new can be scary. I’ve been wanting to start a YouTube channel for a few months now, but I’ve been too nervous to begin. I dealt with a lot of doubt and fear. I’ve gotten really good at making up excuses.

I don’t have a fancy camera to take a quality video. 

I can’t think of somewhere in the house with good lighting that I can take a video without the kids jumping in it or their toys being all over the place.

I don’t know anything about editing or adding cool graphics. How do I learn about that?

What if I run out of things to talk about?

How often should I do a video? Once a day, once a week, a few times a week?

How long should my videos be? 3 minutes or 30 minutes?

I don’t wear make-up most days. Am I gonna have to do my hair and make-up every day I do a video?

What if no one likes or subscribes to my channel?

What if I fail?

Please tell me someone can relate to this! I’ve talked myself out of doing this so much, but think about it almost daily. YouTube has become my Google. When I want to learn a recipe or how to plant strawberries, I don’t go to Google anymore. I go to YouTube. So I thought to myself: Well, I have a website already with information to the public, I should start a YouTube and provide that information in video form. It just makes sense logically, it’s my doubts that get in the way.

The truth is, I am still struggling with many of those questions. I still have my doubts about the quality of the video. There is still the fact that I have no experience in graphic design, video editing, or anything other than shooting video for my kids on my iPhone… But I just decided to let that go. I don’t think I’ll be regretting starting my YouTube channel with my lack of experience. I think in the long run, I would regret not starting at all. I would regret letting my fears take over in this area of my life, and if my fear is winning in one area of my life it’s pretty much a guarantee it’s winning in another area.

Soothe and Support Muscles with doTERRA

One thing I’m really passionate about is education. I love all things about it: the research, the collaboration research, and the execution of the research. I think that’s why I love teaching about doTERRA essential oils every week. Something that I’ve started doing with my team is a weekly Facebook Live video covering a different topic. This week was soothing and supporting your muscles with doTERRA. I thought it would be fun if I shared my weekly topic with you guys too! Something I always start with before ever diving into doTERRA products is to make sure you’re giving your body a good foundation. What does that mean exactly? Get an adequate amount of sleep (this varies from person to person), drink plenty of water (half your body weight in ounces), and eat a healthy variety of food (vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, ancient grains, etc). Set that healthy foundation for yourself!

I have a book that’s the expert at telling me what products to use, and this book tells me that doTERRA Deep Blue is one of the top oils to be used with any sort of pain related issue from headaches to muscles to joints. Deep Blue is a blend of Wintergreen, Camphor Bark, Peppermint, Blue Tansy, Blue Chamomile, Helichrysum, and Osmanthus oil. This oil can be applied neat (without dilution), but if you know your skin is sensitive to peppermint or wintergreen, you probably want to dilute as you put on the area of concern. You can use this oil as needed, but definitely before and after workouts to help with post workout soreness. I love using this after yoga!

Lavender: Lavender is an oil that everyone should have in their homes. It’s a very universal oil, meaning it can be used for practically anything: immune support, mood support, sleep support, you name it! It can be used topically, internally, and aromatically. (Please note: I only recommend doTERRA essential oils. Yes, I sell these oils, but I used the product for over a year before ever diving in the business and it was the one brand I trusted at that time as well.) Lavender oil is great for soreness and can be used topically on the area of concern. For most people, you can use this oil “neat,” meaning without dilution.

Lemongrass: Lemongrass is such an interesting oil. It always surprises me in its uses! This oil can ease joint discomfort, and should be used topically for that purpose. Now, some people are sensitive to lemongrass (like my hubs who won’t let me forget the time I didn’t dilute it for him), so dilute accordingly. You can use this as needed, multiple times a day on the area of concern. The cool thing about lemongrass is that you can also clean with it, diffuse it to purify the air, and even use it for a natural bug repellent.

Marjoram: This oil is wonderful to use before and after workouts. It’s commonly used to soothe those discomforts related to muscles and joints. Marjoram can also be used to promote a healthy cardiovascular system and a healthy immune system. doTERRA Marjoram oil can be used internally, in a diffuser to take advantage of its natural calming properties, or topically. You can dilute with fractionated coconut oil for any skin sensitivities, and apply directly on the pain.

Minty Fresh: Spearmint and Peppermint

Peppermint is an essential oil I never run out of in our home. We use it daily. My kids don’t respond well to seasonal changes, and when the watery eyes, coughing, and runny noses start I blend Peppermint with Lemon and Lavender and apply it daily. My husband takes that exact combination in a pill form every day, especially when he is spending lots of time outdoors. If you need a pick me up in the morning, diffusing Peppermint and Wild Orange helps to perk you up. That combination was a life saver for me when I was pregnant and not drinking caffeine. It really helped to wake me up in the morning! You can also use Peppermint to help with digestive issues by rubbing some on your stomach, or taking a drop of two internally. The uses for Peppermint are endless!

Now, Lavender essential oil is an amazing oil to have in your home. Lavender can be used aromatically, topically, and internally.
